Microdramas — vertical series made up of short episodes designed to be watched on a phone — have become one of the fastest-growing formats of the past few months. What's new isn't the format itself, but that platforms now let any user create and monetize their own series using artificial intelligence, with no film crew and no actors.
A market growing at an unusual pace
The global microdrama market is estimated to reach $14 billion by the end of 2026. Downloads of vertical microdrama apps grew 238% worldwide in the first quarter of the year compared to the same period a year earlier, with even sharper growth spikes in some markets. Behind that growth are platforms like StoReel, which has raised $34 million in funding and launched Canvas, a tool that turns any script into a full series: it automatically generates characters, synthetic voices, scenes and final editing, in vertical episodes of one or two minutes.
Access to these tools is no longer limited to studios: for around $150 in credits, anyone can produce a series and, if it catches on with an audience, start monetizing it. Other platforms like ReelShort and DramaBox compete in the same space, and even traditional studios have shown interest in the format.
The challenges that are still unresolved
It's not all frictionless growth. Technical quality still shows the typical flaws of AI-generated content, like the well-known "uncanny valley" effect in faces and unnatural movement. Copyright over AI-generated stories, voices and styles is still a gray area the industry hasn't figured out yet.
The lesson for any business that creates content
Beyond entertainment, the microdrama phenomenon confirms a deeper trend: AI has radically cut the cost and time needed to produce content at scale. That's an opportunity for any SME, but also a risk if used without judgment: producing a lot of content fast is worthless if it isn't built around what your customer is actually searching for.
- Production speed alone is no longer a competitive edge — everyone has it now.
- The real difference lies in strategy: who you're talking to and what problem you're solving for them.
- Content produced without review or search intent behind it won't rank or convert, no matter how fast it was made.
From fast production to real strategy
Just like with microdramas, AI can speed up content production for your website, but it needs a strategy behind it to actually work. Our content generation service combines speed with real keyword research, so every piece answers an actual search instead of just adding to the pile.
