On December 4, 2025, Microsoft announced a global price increase for its Microsoft 365 commercial plans, taking effect on July 1, 2026. The news went relatively unnoticed for many SMEs because it doesn't hit everyone at once: each customer keeps their current price until their renewal date. That means plenty of Spanish businesses are discovering the increase only now, when their renewal invoice lands, not when the announcement was made.
How much each plan actually goes up
The increase isn't uniform: it varies by plan, from 5% on some Enterprise-tier plans up to 43% on the entry F1 plan without Teams. For the plans most Spanish SMEs actually use, increases run around 12-13%: Microsoft 365 Business Standard goes from $12.50 to $14 per user per month, and Office 365 E3 goes from $23 to $26. Those are the global US-dollar figures Microsoft published; the final euro price on your invoice can vary depending on your reseller and the exchange rate applied.
Why it's going up: Copilot becomes part of the base package
Microsoft has been explicit about the reason: the update bundles new AI capabilities, security features and device management into existing subscriptions. Specifically, Business Basic and Business Standard plans gain Copilot Chat features (able to read context from your inbox and calendar, with access to Word and Excel), an extra 50GB of mailbox storage, and additional link protection in Outlook. Microsoft has also launched two new bundles, Business Standard with Copilot and Business Premium with Copilot, for anyone who wants the full AI assistant built in.
What to check before your next renewal
- Confirm your contract's exact renewal date: until then, you keep paying the old price.
- Check which plan you're actually on now and compare it against the increase percentage that applies to it.
- Consider whether the newly added Copilot features actually give you anything real, or whether you'd be paying more for AI capabilities your team won't use.
- Review how many active licenses you have versus how many your team actually uses: this is the easiest moment to trim unused licenses without it reading as a cutback, since the bill is going up regardless.
Google Workspace, the most common alternative to Microsoft 365, has also raised prices in 2026, by roughly 17% to 29% depending on the plan. If you were considering switching suites to save money, it's worth comparing the actual increase on both before making the jump, not just today's list price.
How we see it at Mitza
A price increase on a tool you use daily is rarely a reason to switch overnight, but it is a good moment to review what you're actually paying for and why. The same goes for any AI tool you've added along the way without much of a plan: our guide to free AI tools for SMEs covers alternatives that can meet specific needs without relying on a pricier paid plan. If you want a full review of your digital tools stack and your equipment in general, our audit and IT maintenance services cover exactly that kind of diagnostic.
