Tips to get the most out of it
Base64 is not encryption
Anyone can decode Base64. It is used to carry binary data or text with special characters through channels that only accept text, not to hide information.
URL-safe Base64
It replaces + and / with - and _ and removes the trailing =, so it can be used inside URLs, file names and tokens such as JWTs.
URL encoding
It turns spaces and special characters into %XX sequences: “a b&c” becomes “a%20b%26c”. It is what you need when putting a text in a URL parameter.
Size
Base64 turns every 3 bytes into 4 characters, so the resulting text is about 33% longer.
Frequently asked questions
How do I decode a Base64 text?
Choose “Base64 → text”, paste the code and you will see the original text. It also accepts the URL-safe variant.
What is Base64?
It is a way of representing binary data using only 64 safe characters (letters, digits, + and /). It is used in emails, embedded images and tokens.
Why does my Base64 end in =?
The equals sign is padding: it makes the length a multiple of 4. One or two trailing “=” are normal.
Does it work with accents and emojis?
Yes. The text is first converted to UTF-8 and then to Base64, so “ñ” or “😀” are encoded and recovered without loss.
