How it works and what it does with your text
It's a small, straightforward utility: you paste, choose options and copy the result.
It runs in your browser
The text is transformed by this page's code, on your device. No sign-up or installation needed.
We don't store what you type
We don't send your text to any server or store it. You can check this in the Network tab of your browser's developer tools.
Free and unlimited
Use it as often as you like. It works the same on mobile and on desktop.
Tips to get the most out of it
What a hash is
It is a fixed-length fingerprint of a text: any change, even a comma, produces a completely different result, and the original text cannot be recovered from the hash.
MD5 and SHA-1 for checking, not for protecting
MD5 and SHA-1 have known collisions: they are fine for checking that a file has not been corrupted, but not for signatures or security. Use SHA-256 or higher.
Never store passwords with a simple hash
SHA-256 is too fast and can be attacked with dictionaries. For passwords, slow salted algorithms are used: Argon2, bcrypt or scrypt, on the server.
HMAC for signing messages
HMAC combines the hash with a secret key and is used to sign API requests and notifications (webhooks). Check your implementation by comparing results here.
Frequently asked questions
How do I generate the MD5 hash of a text?
Type the text, choose MD5 and copy the 32-character hexadecimal result. It is instant and calculated in your browser.
Can a hash be reversed (decrypting MD5)?
No: it is a one-way function. Sites that “decrypt MD5” only compare against tables of hashes of known texts, which is why they fail with long or random texts.
What is the difference between MD5, SHA-1 and SHA-256?
They differ in length and security: MD5 gives 128 bits, SHA-1 160 and SHA-256 256. The first two are considered broken for cryptographic use.
What is the SHA-256 hash of “hello world”?
It is b94d27b9934d3e08a52e52d7da7dabfac484efe37a5380ee9088f7ace2efcde9, the one you get here by typing those two words in lowercase and choosing SHA-256.
