Tips to get the most out of it

Order follows the page language

On English pages the order follows English rules: accents don't change the position (“Éclair” goes with the E) and ñ counts as an n with a mark. On the Spanish version of this tool, ñ is placed after n, as in a dictionary. In a badly configured spreadsheet this often comes out the wrong way round.

Numbers inside text

With natural order, “file2” comes before “file10”. With plain alphabetical order it would come after, because it compares character by character.

Shuffle at random for draws

Random order uses the browser's cryptographic generator: handy for drawing names, turns or the speaking order. Click “Generate again” for another shuffle.

A clean list in three steps

Remove empty lines, remove duplicates and sort. This tool does all three at once with the “Remove empty lines” and “Remove duplicates after sorting” checkboxes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I sort a list alphabetically?

Paste the list with one item per line, choose “Alphabetical (A → Z)” and copy the result.

How do I sort from Z to A?

Choose “Reverse alphabetical (Z → A)”.

Does it sort numbers correctly?

Use the “Natural / numeric” order: 2 goes before 10. With alphabetical order, “10” would come before “2” because it starts with “1”.

Can I shuffle a list at random?

Yes: choose “Shuffle at random”. Every time you click “Generate again” you get a different order.
