A website doesn't end the day it goes live. WordPress, plugins and themes constantly release security fixes, browsers change and backups are only useful if someone checks they work. Website maintenance takes care of that, and its price varies enormously depending on the provider. We've reviewed the public rates of several Spanish providers to give an honest idea of what to expect (the sources are in Spanish).
What a website maintenance plan includes
Although every provider presents it its own way, a reasonable plan covers these points, as described by guides such as the one from Yag Comunicación or the one from Nerade:
- Updates to WordPress, plugins and themes.
- Backups, ideally stored away from the website's server and with a retention period.
- Monitoring of availability, so you're alerted if the website goes down.
- Security: monitoring, malware scanning and a firewall.
- Regular checks for errors and speed.
- A report of what has been done.
- Support for incidents and, depending on the plan, small changes.
What it costs in Spain: market ranges
These are the rates some providers publish, as a reference and not as an offer from us:
- Yag Comunicación: basic from €30 to €80 a month, standard from €80 to €200, premium from €200 to €500 and WooCommerce stores from €300 to €800.
- Destaca: from €50 to €170 a month for simple websites or blogs, from €150 to €200 for corporate websites and from €200 to €500 for stores or more demanding websites.
- Nerade: automatic maintenance from €15 to €29 a month, professional basic from €29 to €50, standard from €50 to €120 and complex websites from €150 to over €400.
- Nominalia: €240 a year excluding VAT (about €20 a month) on its standard web presence plan and €270 a year on the online store one.
The ranges don't match because each provider means something different by "maintenance". If you hire individual hours instead of a plan, the sources quote between €40 and €120 per hour. Another rule of thumb reported by Yag Comunicación: annual maintenance usually costs between 6% and 15% of what building the website cost.
We don't publish our rates here because they depend on the website: after a quick review of its current state we give you a fixed quote.
What is usually left out of the price
A maintenance plan usually doesn't cover, according to Yag Comunicación, new design, content creation, active SEO strategy, functionality changes (bookings, payment gateways), recovery after a hack that has already happened or hosting migrations. Nor does it cover costs charged by third parties. Nerade puts, as a reference, hosting at €80 to €200 a year, the domain at about €12 a year and paid plugin licences at €40 to over €150 a year each.
How to compare quotes: the difference is in how it's done
Two plans can list the same things and have nothing in common. Before deciding, ask:
- Are updates tested? An unchecked update can break the website; what matters is that it's verified after installing.
- Where are the backups kept, and has restoring one been tested? A backup that has never been restored is a hope, not a backup.
- Is security active, or are there only plugin alerts?
- What response times are committed to in writing?
- Do you get a report of what was done?
- Who knows your website? Changing technician every month gets expensive.
What you risk if you don't maintain it
A website without maintenance accumulates versions with known flaws, and those flaws are published and exploited quickly. In recent months we've covered critical vulnerabilities in WordPress, Elementor Pro and wp2shell, and the AEPD has already documented an attack carried out by an AI agent that explores applications on its own. Cleaning up an infected website and winning back your customers' trust usually costs quite a bit more than a basic plan.
If you built your website on a tight budget, it's worth planning maintenance from the start, as we explain in how much a cheap website costs and in the guide to saving without losing quality.
How we can help
If you'd rather have someone take care of it, our website maintenance service starts with a review of your website's current state (versions, backups, security and speed). If you want to know first what is exposed, a website security audit or a speed audit gives you a prioritised report, with no need to hire maintenance afterwards.
